Official Installation Guide
Overview:
This official guide applies ONLY to the OpenMobile ACL for webOS Preview for HP TouchPad provided by webOS 3.0.5
Stage 0: Backup your device
A guide by PreCentral on backing up your device can be found here.
Also, make sure you run the Application:SaveRestore application from Preware to back up your application data. (Thanks to WebOS Internals for the amazing work on this app!)
Then copy all the files from the USB drive onto your PC to keep them safe, including music, downloads, and pictures.
Stage 1: Prerequisites
-
Disk Space on your HP TouchPad
You should allow up to 1GB of disk space for this process.
-
Novacom Drivers
If you are unable to get the official novacom drivers from the Palm SDK to connect to your device, you can alternately try Jason Robitaille's Universal Novacom Driver Installer
These drivers are necessary to interface with the HP TouchPad. The Installer is cross-platform and supports Windows (32bit and 64bit), Mac OS, and Ubuntu (32bit and 64bit).
Stage 2 [ENABLING DEVELOPER MODE]
About: Developer mode allows you to install different homebrew applications onto your device without the need for the App catalog.
Note: These functions are done on your webOS device.
Steps:
- Save all open files and close all apps on your device. Then hit the "Just type" area on your TouchPad to show the virtual keyboard.
- Start typing "webos20090606" (without quotes). A "Developer Mode" app icon will appear, tap on it.
- Set Developer Mode to ON - It's advisable to NOT set a password.
- You may be asked to "Restart Your Device". This will reboot your device.
- Plug your device into your computer with the USB Cable. Select "Close". Do NOT select USB Drive mode.
Stage 3 [INSTALLING ACL FOR WEBOS PREVIEW] - IT REQUIRES INTERNET CONNECTION ENABLED (wifi or 4g)
About: WebOS Quick Install is a utility used to quickly install apps and other software on your TouchPad device.
Note: These functions are done on your home computer.
Steps:
- Ensure your computer is up to date with the latest Java. On your PC, Mac, or Linux computer, go to http://bit.ly/phd-java-test to verify your Java version. Let it update Java as needed. Mac OSX users may need to run
/Application/Utilities/Java/Javapreferences and drag Java SE 6 to top of both lists, and exit. - Download WebOS Quick Install from the official forum thread: http://bit.ly/phd-wosqi4. When asked, click "Save". Save the file in a location that you can remember, such as My Documents or your Desktop and please consider donating to the developer!
- When the download is complete click Open.
- If you have not previously installed Novacom drivers on your computer, WebOS Quick Install will alert you that the Novacom Driver is missing and needs to be installed.
- Select Yes to allow the Novacom Driver to be downloaded and installed.
- If you forgot to enable developer mode, or do not have your HP TouchPad connected properly, you may see the following error messages. Enable developer mode and/or reconnect your device before relaunching webOS Quick Install.
- If WebOS Quick Install is still unable to connect to your TouchPad, select the menu item "". You may also need to download the latest Novacom drivers from: http://opensource.palm.com/packages.html If all attempts to connect to your TouchPad fail and you have double checked developer mode and physical connections (no USB hubs or extenders), please ask for assistance in the official forum thread: http://www.phxdevices.com/forums/ACL/installation
- If all is well, WebOS Quick Install will automatically open to this screen once ready. Click on the Online Repository button (the blue globe button below the green plus and red minus buttons).
- At this point, WebOS Quick Install will download all the available package information from a number of online repositories hosted by WebOS Internals, PreCentral and some other sites. Please do not forget to donate to WebOS Internals!
- Bring the file "com.phxdevices.acl-for-webos-touchpad_0.6.0-4_armv7.ipk" to the WebOS Quick Install main interface. Then press the "Install" button. The installation can require up to 10 minutes. DON'T DISCONNECT YOUR TOUCHPAD DURING THIS PROCESS, OR YOU COULD HAVE NEED TO USE THE DOCTOR TO RESTORE IT.
- Once it has completed, you can close WebOS Quick Install as well as unplug your device from the computer.
- REBOOT your HP TouchPad.
- You can leave Developer Mode on if you intend to use WebOS Quick Install in the future, otherwise turn it off at this point. Follow the same in instructions in Stage 1, but set the switch to OFF.
- If you have any further questions please refer to the forum noted above or email us at: support@phxdevices.com
Stage 4 [ACTIVATING ACL'S LICENSE] - - IT REQUIRES INTERNET CONNECTION ENABLED (wifi or 4g)
In this Preview the activation is automatically handled by our developers, so you will not have to care about it.
Please remind to don't share with anyone this Pre-Release if you haven't received from a PIC manager the written rights to do it. If you don't respect this simple rule, we could decide to stop your license.
Stage 5 [JOIN ACL FOR WEBOS ON YOUR HP TOUCHPAD] - START TO INSTALL ANDROID APPS!
Now is all set! Just open an Android app and play! If you want leave a feedback here!
Now go to the OpenMobile AppMall and start downloading & installing apps!
Installing an apk currently not available in the common app catalogs is really simple:
- Go to "Settings"
- then go to "Applications"
- And here enable the first voice "Unknown sources"
- Now you need just to sideload some apk you have the right to install - or you can download some free apk using the Android web browser and install it directly from the download manager inside the browser! ;)
All of this is alive thanks to your support. Our passion is made of your webOS love.
